Cameroonian archivist Mümshe carefully handles an iconic image from Cameroonian-German colonial history:
A staged group photo of the court of Bamun and German colonizers shows German-Austrian photographer Rudolph Oldenburg putting his boot on the throne of King Njoya of Bamun. Normally this act of disrespect would have cost him his head or life imprisonment, but the white man went without punishment.
Mümshe slowly moves a magnifying lens across the image: there it is! A barely noticable mosquito sucking blood from Oldenburg’s neck.
In “Mosquito, history eater” we enter Oldenburg’s mindscape, guided by Mümshe’s Bamun words. He is infected by the sting and begins to hallucinate: slowly his own image worlds start to turn into a colonial fever dream.
