40.000 people are missing in Mexico. We call them desaparecidos. The disappeared. But they don`t disappear. They get murdered, trafficed or enslaved. 40.000 families are searching for their daughter, son, father or mother. In every family there is a wound that cannot heal, because they don`t know if their loved ones are still alive or long dead.
In “Ausente” we follow one mother that looks for her daughter. She lives in a patriarchal society: She is supposed to care for the family and stay at home. However since the mass disappearences the role of this caring mother has expanded: Mothers have taken to the streets in protest. They organized themselves to search for hidden mass graves in the desert. “Ausente” tells the story of one of those mothers as she takes matters into her own hands to find those who the state can not or will not find.
